It is always fun to try something new, and today I decided to try lettering with watercolor pencils. This post shows you step by step how I made my watercolor pencil lettering piece.

When creating more complicated lettering pieces I often start with a pencil sketch. This time I decided to go for a fun and flourished faux brush lettering style.

After the initial sketch, I started adding colors using my Royal Talens Van Gogh Water Color pencils. I applied color similar to when I use regular pencils, but without worrying about the blend.

Once I had added all the colors, I started blending them directly on the paper with the help of a Water Brush. Any brush and a little water will do the trick.

Next up I added some heavy shadows to my lettering to make it “pop” a little extra. I used my Tombow Fudenosuke Twin Brush Pen for the shadows.

… and there we have it!

I enjoyed using the watercolor pencils. They are very similar to working with regular pencils, but superpowered in the way that they allow you to blend your colors smoothly.
